It wasn’t an easy feat to decide on a destination for our anniversary getaway in October. Needless to say, it had to be something exotic.. and special.. and umm romantic!! 🙂 While hubby wanted a beach location (as usual!), I wanted to ensure we are not missing out out on the fall colors season! Lake Tahoe had always been on our bucket list, and it looked like an obvious choice for this holiday…and we are glad we did it!
Lake Tahoe turned out to such a dreamy destination. It was a perfect blend of everything we needed – crystal clear blue waters, relaxing beaches surrounded by majestic mountains, plenty of hiking trails and stunning fall colors to top it all.
Here are a few pointers to help you plan your trip to Lake Tahoe.
Where is Lake Tahoe?
I don’t know about you, but I was totally left confused when researching about the place prior to our travel. Is ‘Lake Tahoe’ the name of a lake or a city? Is it in California or is it in Nevada? What is Tahoe City? And many other questions kept flocking our mind!
So, first up – let me solve this puzzle…
Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in the US. The California-Nevada state border cuts through the lake in almost the middle, dividing the region into these 2 states of CA and NV. Typically, this state border only decides the presence or absence of a casino – so don’t get too baffled or technical about this fact!
As such, for the purposes of getting around, there are 2 main regions in Lake Tahoe – North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe. Both the North and South side of the lake is home to plenty of beaches, shores, state parks and hiking trails.
How to get to Lake Tahoe?
Drive – South Lake Tahoe is a short 3.5 hours drive from San Francisco/ Bay Area, a distance of about 190 miles. This makes it an easy and quick access and a trendy weekend destination for the Bay area residents.
Fly – If you don’t live in California, you can choose to fly into the Reno/ Tahoe International Airport, which is about an hour’s drive from South Lake and even less than that for the Northern part.

Where to Stay?
South Lake Tahoe – This is generally the more popular parts of the lake offering all amenities and a variety of hotels, resorts, casinos and restaurants. You can call it the downtown of Lake Tahoe to say so! Having said that, it still offers a small town charm where everything is an easy access with a short walk or a Bird’s ride away. For the more adventurous ones, there are many campgrounds and RV parkings available as well, specially on the Emerald Bay road.
North Lake Tahoe – This is the less populated area with some great beaches, state parks and tiny villages. However, you will find fewer stay options as compared to the Southern side – mostly smaller hotels or homestays. Tahoe City is a small town (technically in California) on the Northern part of the lake and houses a few restaurants and public beaches.
Reno, NV – During the peak summer seasons or long weekends, it is hard to find a moderately priced good lodging option in the Tahoe area. In such a scenario, you may want to move a little away and look at Reno city in Nevada. It is a sizeable city and houses almost all usual hotel chains. Usually, Reno is about a 45 minutes’ drive from Lake Tahoe but might take longer during peak seasons owing to the weekend traffic.
Best time to visit?
Lake Tahoe is definitely a year round destination with a diversity of recreational activities to match. There are different fun things to do for each season.
Summer – This is typically the busiest season of the year. Like any other beach destination, summers bring in the opportunity for a lot of water activities like boating, kayaking, paddle boarding and even snorkeling or scuba diving. Only the beaches here offer a totally different take on your traditional beach outings!! Imagine the beach actually happens to be a lake shore surrounded by mountains, sometimes snow capped mountains – and this makes it for an exquisite view.
Fall – Fall is my most favorite season of the year, so I have to be a bit biased! Incidentally, I happened to visit the place during Fall. And sure I was not disappointed. The orange, red and gold colors of the trees make for a great contrast to the blue color of the lake. The crowds usually thin out by October, and this offers an added advantage of saving time in traffic or lines. The trails were quieter, and the weather was just perfect with a little chill in the crisp air but the warm sunshine cuts through the cold.
Winter – This is the perfect time for the snow skiers and snow boarders to cluster the place. Starting November, Lake Tahoe starts to get busy after a less crowded fall season. There are plenty of options with many ski resorts and snow activities throughout the region, and the famous Gondola rides are in full swing. When driving around the area in winters, you will need to keep a check on any roads that may be clogged with snow or closed. So be prepared to endure frequent traffic and route diversions.
What to do and places to visit?
Drive around Lake Tahoe
This is a must-do activity, and I would recommend you to go for it on the first day. This would be the best way to get a feel of the place and pick your favorite spots in the region. The drive around the lake is a 72-mile loop, which can be easily covered in 3 to 4 hours, at a very leisurely pace. This is enough time to soak in the breathtaking scenery, stop at the numerous vista overlook points and take lots of pictures.
Trust me, you will make so many stops on the way and it’s a good idea to just walk/ hike down till the lake to wet your feet in the water wherever you feel like. It works not to have an agenda, just enjoy the place and you will end up discovering gorgeous spots and unmatched views of the shades of the water. Note that almost all of the drive is a single lane drive, so you will be following the pace of the running traffic ahead of you anyway.

Emerald Bay State Park and Vikingshom castle
Did you know that Emerald Bay is the most photographed spot on earth? Amazing, isn’t it! If you’re driving to the park from the South side, do stop at the lookout vista points for an unbeatable view of the lake and the Fannette Island. There are many overlook points just a mile before you get to the park, so be sure to stop for some picture opportunities. The views totally look like a painting.
Once you get to the entrance of the state park, there is a trail of approx. 1.5 miles downhill that takes you to the shore and the Vikingshom castle, a hidden historic piece of Scandinavian architecture now turned into a museum. There are other trails like Eagle Falls trail and Rubicon trail, which connects the Emerald Bay to the nearby Eagle Falls and D.L. Bliss State Park respectively.
D.L. Bliss State Park
This state park is definitely one of the most beautiful hidden gems ofthe area. It is located just a little north of the Emerald Bay State Park, so you can choose to drive or hike via the Rubicon Trail. The park, typically open from May through September, is one of the most scenic stretches of Tahoe shoreline and perfect for diving or launching a boat. It also offers a ton of hiking trails to explore the shores, beaches and even rocks to jump off into the water.
Kings Beach/ Commons beach
Kings beach is a funky little beach town, with a gorgeous beach and the bright sparkling colors exploding across the lake. This makes up for a perfect spot to lie down on the white sands or jump into the water. The options for activities are plentiful, with many nearby places to rent a kayak or paddle-board. The crystal clear waters are inviting enough for you to want to dive in or snorkel.
Sand Harbour beach/ Incline Village
Sand Harbor is a natural area where you can snorkel, swim, hike, launch a boat and do much more. It is also the home of the renowned Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. You can even cruise up to the amazing waters of Crystal Bay from here. To add to it, the rocks at the shore add a touch of drama to the view when you ogle at the clear waters to the bottom of the lake.
Relax, Restore and Rejuvenate!!
There is no denying that the wealth of shores and peaks in Lake Tahoe is good to occupy a vacationer or explorer for days! But sometimes even doing nothing at all works. When there’s gorgeous views all around, you don’t even feel the need to rush to the next attraction or agenda. So just take it easy.
The beauty of the place left us wowed and so many times, we just felt as if we are inside of a painting! We truly found peace in the great outdoors, and got back home totally refreshed.
