However, when the graduation speeches are over and the band has played the last note of Pomp and Circumstance, many graduates become overwhelmed with the reality that they are entering the real world.

Many young adults leave college with a hefty load of debt and are often ill-prepared to face the financial decisions that await them. Developing effective spending and saving habits, learning to budget, and gaining control of debt are essential steps for getting college graduates on solid financial ground.

While cufflinks do make a great graduation gift, if you know a college student graduating this year, give him or her the gift of a lifetime by sharing some advice on how to prepare for future financial success.

1. Educate Yourself

This may seem pretty basic for someone who just spent years getting an education, but the fact is many graduates have a poor understanding of personal finance. Whether earning $25,000 or $75,000 a year, the choices a person makes immediately after college can have long-term effects on his or her financial health for many years to come. Saving for retirement is probably the last thing on the minds of most college graduates, but if they don’t start now they’ve missed an opportunity they won’t ever get back. The power of compounding earnings means that those who begin saving in their early twenties can develop a significant retirement portfolio by investing regularly.

Graduates should also understand the perks available through their own employee benefits programs. If they don’t take advantage of a 401(k) matching program, they are not only jeopardizing their future retirement but essentially walking away from free money. Another common mistake is not signing up for company subsidized medical coverage. No matter how healthy a person has been in the past, an unexpected medical emergency can lead to a devastating financial situation. Financially savvy people not only understand how money grows but also how to minimize loss should disaster strike.

2. Walk away from the marketing pitches

One of the greatest financial risks for young adults is falling prey to advertising gimmicks such as “zero-down,” “no payments until 2008,” and “buy one, get one free.” New graduates are often a prime target of marketers aiming to sell everything from cell phones and furniture to fast cars and new houses. The overuse of credit is a serious problem in all age groups, but recent graduates need to be especially cautious not to overextend their credit. It is important to establish a good credit history, so opening a credit card is a wise financial move; however, there is no need for more than one or two credit cards. The key is to pay off the full balance every month to avoid costly interest rate charges and to pay the bill on time to avoid late fees.

In addition to paying off credit card debt, it is imperative that new graduates get a handle on repayment of their student loans. With much more glamorous ways to spend money such as purchasing a new car, splurging for nights out on the town, and finally getting that big screen television, it can be easy to forget about the existing debt. As the old saying goes, patience is a virtue and the best advice is to hold off on those fancy purchases until a repayment plan is established and the graduate has an idea of what he or she can really afford.

4. Take the time to develop a budget

Living on your own comes with a long list of expenses including rent, insurance, groceries, and so much more, that a recent college graduate may not even think about. Although it may sound time-consuming, it is important to create a budget. Budgeting effectively means setting goals and developing a plan to meet those goals. Often for recent graduates, reality hits with that first paycheck and all the deductions that go along with it. They realize quickly that there is a big difference between gross salary and net salary. By keeping an accurate record of expenditures, new graduates can see where their money is going and stick to a spending plan that allows them to focus on things that really matter.
